South African National Defence Force Reviews

Stay to retire or move on. Do not rock the boat

Excellent learning curve. Difficult parastatal type business culture in a private entity. Overwhelming labor union influence that overrides executive and Board leadership impacting on ability to change and adapt to 21st century business culture and methods. Lack of competitor (monopoly) and critical product and service to society is a saving influence against a lack of business acumen across the business and archaic culture due to excessive life tenure of staff and lack of staff churn to influence new culture and thinking. Lack of career growth opportunities and also very restrictive employment change options cultivates a growing culture of corruption and fraud to compensate for a lack of personal and professional growth that would normally transfer into financial growth. Parastatal type business culture in a private and Not for Profit entity.

Pros: Job satisfaction linked to the contribution to society made by the product and services of the company
Cons: Business culture. Isolated staff culture due to significant volume of life tenures and low staff churn.

Im lookingt o further my career as an Electrician. A relationships as electricians is good because we learn everyday as electricians. The experience I have is good because I have learned a lot over the years, the reason im looking for new job is because I want to learn more and show the extent of my qualifications.

Pros: Opportunity to futher my career
Cons: More opportunities

Excellent experience and a very good learning curve

My job is very challenging but at the same time its an exciting journey where one has to learn and learn while growing very fast. Commanding over 80 members some of them with more experience than myself was in the beginning a challenge but I had to exercise authority and put the mandate trusted unto me by the Defence Force and ensure that that mandate is not compromised while also leading by inspiring my members.

Pros: immeasurable experience
Cons: Always being away from home

Excellent learning curve with an opportunity to travel and work with different people

Excellent learning curve with an opportunity to travel and work with different people. You get to be exposed to different career paths. What do not like is they don't give people the opportunity to explore those careers. I would like to see them investing in their people.

Pros: Get to work with different people and travel.
Cons: Struggle to get contracts and call ups if you are a reserve force member.

Excellent learning curve and great experience

My current work place is a friendly environment but at times very tense due to the last minutes required designs. I have learned to pay very special attention to detail and also to embrace criticism and grow from it instead of losing focus just because of criticism. My relationship with colleagues is very good because we help each other when it comes to the designs, information, sharing useful information for designs or skills developing etc we work as a team. I enjoy working on site and seeing displays of our designs at big events.

Pros: Great Experience and improves work ethics.
Cons: You only have 8 hours to do everything each day.

Was a good learning curve

I am at work by 8 o’clock, as we all start at 8 and the knock of at 16:00. Sometimes I finish a bit later because of being alone in a department and I need to finish up some admin work or because I am needed at another unit. I have a good relationship with my co-workers. I have learnt that time management is key to running a department successfully. I enjoy having to be on the road a lot but that comes with its own price as admin can suffer. The most challenging aspect of this job was having to draw up Financial Authorities for major items that are required.

Pros: Getting to network with new people everyday
Cons: Falling behind with office admin on days when things are really busy
