South African Local Government Association Reviews

Excellent work environment

SALGA is a dynamic organisation, full of innovation and in the Growth Phase. The organisation is still much in its forming stage as we have a view and input in all the policies that are developed. A typical day starts at 08H00 at SALGA and finishes at 4H30, but for me as a communications person this would be a rear situation as from time to time i have to attend to urgent Media Queries as and when they arise. Because the organisation is in the forming stage, team work is vital and no program can survive without the next person. Joining SALGA has though me a lot of things about how Government operates and the importance of it. The best part about my job is the innovation and creative element that it brings. The most challenging aspects is the Sector we operate in, the political influence that hinders progress from time to time.

Pros: The ability to be innovative and in return learn something new about yourself daily. What you are capable of.
Cons: Political Influence in the Sphere

Stakeholder relations and management is key.

Marketing and communications at SALGA is all about profiling the Organisation and the work that the organisation does ensuring that our members see value for the money they pay. This includes Stakeholder relations management, Brand awareness and Brand management. it is always important that Marketing elevates the Value that the organisation is offering to its members. Communication is another important component of my work as it includes managing the Main stream Media and Social Media pages (Twitter, Facebook and Youtube). This position has granted me an opportunity to grow people skills and the ability to effectively work in a team. it is dynamic and allows a lot on innovation. The most challenging aspects of the job is the environment in which we trade. it is highly influenced by politics and thus creating instability at times.

Pros: The is so much to learn and ability to make a difference in our country
Cons: Political influence

My working strategy and working relationship

I usually start my work at 8:30 am , collaboratively plan my day ,and make sure that the most urgent work gets done first. The most interesting part of this job is that there is no ‘typical’ day. One day I would be busy scheduling meetings and the other day I would be capturing ,indexing ,filling and scanning documents . Maybe the next day I would be busy making presentations. If the job is unpredictable and calls for efficiency, I try my best to reach that level.I had an excellent professional relationship with my co workers, which gelled quite nicely with the company environment. People assisted one another. We worked as a team to solve problems and learned new skills to reach our team objectives. I made some good friends for life, who today can vouch for me on a professional basis.

Pros: Great opportunity for promotion
Cons: Working in an unsettled environment

Excellent learning curve in managing multiple divisions

I work in an extremely challenging & agile environment where I have to constantly be abreast of the industry. Key in my role is making sure that communication to all stakeholders is efficient. I have a dynamic team responsible for marketing, media relations and stakeholder relations. Interesting about my role is getting to know and understand how local government works and implementing systems for effective communication. Being an effective leader who allows individuals to express and implement ideas which will better improve our service delivery. Some challenges include reputation management. Servicing multiple units with varying needs has been exciting as well as the different communication methods and packaging content to make sure it is suitable for all audiences. I have a great relationship with my team who understand that working in a high-pressure environment requires being responsive at all timesl.

Pros: Great opportunity for career growth and expand my knowledge of a different industry
Cons: sometime planning may be a challenge given the agility of the industry

Excelent learning curve

• I have developed and managed the Corporate Identity Manual for SALGA, a deliverable that should have been catered for during the SALGA rebranding project and which I individually and successfully carried out. The CI Manual is currently being utilized for all SALGA branding processes • In addition to my design work, I have been assisting the Marketing Manager in managing SALGA branding • Received SALGA Best Directorate employee of the year and Best SALGA Employee of the year in 2016. • Helped in developing the Municipal Branding Guidelines. • When a gap was presented by the vacancy of Marketing Coordinator, I took on this responsibility, which included supporting MID (Municipal Capabilities and Corporate Governance), Finance and Corporate Services and KZN province from 2017. I am still performing these duties at present • Supported SALGA events in different capacities not limited to Marketing and Communication but also Registration, IT related work, and Branding.

Pros: Not in my section
Cons: Normal working hours

Pros: Challenging and exciting , ability to learn new things every day , get to learn diverse work cultures of the province and different and unique challenges of each entity that we support and advise. The experience that is gained over the years is invaluable , One is required to constantly develop themselves professionally in order to keep up to date with modern trends and international best practices.
Cons: Political environment could discourage at times , Might be an invisible hand in a form of interference from politics which could render ones service futile. It is very important to understand how the political landscape operates. Keep up to date with economic trends as politics and economy could influence the day to day work as the work we do is mostly influence by politics. There are new challenges everyday which requires a job incumbent to be able to adapt to the ever changing environment.
