Sappi Southern Africa Reviews

Great opportunity to learn and gain exposure within the company

My typical work day will include:Keeping employees and the management team in the company informed on issues that affect the performance in the workplace. Keep employees informed on positive developments in the company and build an understanding in the events of problems. Assist with day-to-day tasks minutes taking and general admin filling. Develop internal publications such as newsletters, email announcements, planned publications, posters and special assignments. Liaise with NGO’s regarding stakeholder engagements (CSI). Provided functional and administrative support for the execution of relevant projects and plans. The relationship I have with my co-workers is amazing they are easy people to get along with and seek advice from. I have learned so much during my time at Sappi. Learning about the different aspects that are included in being a communications officer. The challenge was at first standing in front of big crowds and speaking to them, however I got used speaking in front of large crowds.

Pros: Great opportunity to interact with employees.
Cons: N/A

Sailing into the Sunset

I have been Exposed to Excellent experiences. Daily Learn to over deliver & under budget juggling soft services and customer satisfaction. A professional relationship does not guarantee smooth sailing, how you approach & interact no matter the subject is cause for good relationships. I learnt that you can be 100% equipped, yet never too old or educated to learn. Honesty is the best Policy. The diverse components of a FM’s day are what I enjoy most. Challenges present themselves normally in wrong perception and assumptions and can turn any calm and collected situation into a storm instead of sailing into the sunset. That is why Communication is key.

Pros: Great time to spread my wings and merge experience with new challenges to further my career and promotion opportunities.
Cons: Initial long work hours to settle into a new position pertaining location and driving late at night/early mornings

I developed management skills

Sappi Southern Africa is a company that manufactures paper from the ground up. Such papers like Typek. My area of expertise was to manage communication (IT) across all branches in South Africa, this means that I ensured that end-users' computers are functioning (remotely and telephonically). I had a strong relationship with my colleagues as IT did not dominate in the company. We were the backbone of the company in terms of communication so we worked closely with each other to reach a common goal. I learnt to be able to work under pressure and juggle tasks simultaneously because it is not really easy to manage effective communication between many branches of the company. That is what I enjoyed most, the job was challenging.

Pros: Promotion within a year
Cons: The job was strenous

Good company to work for

Working at Sappi has made me grow in terms of my communication skills. We work very hard at maintaining both internal and external stakeholder relationships. Everyday has its own challenges, so its up to a person on how to deal with every days challenges. How you tackle your job, making sure its complete yet maintain accuracy. I deal a lot with placing orders, so its very important to be an attentive to detail person. Yes mistakes happen, but you have to be an attentive person. I have also grown on my negotiating skills, the approach etc. Its important to know your story when you going to deal with suppliers, because its business.

Pros: Great opportunity for growth
Cons: Location, very hard to find a reasonable flat near work

Refreshing working enviroment

My morning would start with a black cup of coffee to get me started for the day as I read my emails at 8am then around 9:30 we have a team catchup meeting to update each other on challenges from the previous day as well as advising co workers on ways to eliminate mistakes or the difficulties we face with clients. There after the meeting I would start with booking orders on the system then run my daily reports to make sure all the weighbridge tickets from the day before have been captured and correctly invoiced. Once all that is done I do a balancing of our stocks and answer any queries that come through.

Pros: challenging tasks and new breakthrough each day
Cons: Noise in the industrial area where we were situated
