Public Protector South Africa Reviews

It was a great working environment

Ensuring that State-owned entities adhere to and implement the remedial actions set out in the reports of the Public Protector; Monitoring the implementation of remedial action and ensuring that there is no undue delay without just cause; Draft letters to Heads of Departments and Ministries to ensure that such implementation takes place; Write progress reports for the Public Protector of the cases we are dealing with; and Draft subpoenas in terms of section 11 of the Public Protector Act.

Pros: Exposure
Cons: Long hours at times; State Organs refusing to cooperate

Excellent environment providing opportunity to grow

We resolve bread and butter issues registered by ordinary people against government. We there mediate and conciliate. We also investigate and make findings with remedial action. Team work is key in our environment. Individual employees share skills and we learn different techniques on a daily basis. We also learn from complainants who often are experts on subject matter of investigation. The challenging aspect of our job is high expectations from complainants and high workload sometimes involving complex cases. Political interference also has an effect on our job.

Pros: Opportunities for growth are high.
Cons: Sometimes we are expected to put in extra hours in order to meet deadlines.

Opportunity for learning

I have been working at PPSA provincial office for over six years as an Admin Assistant. There is a huge difference between Admin Assistant in provincial and national office. An admin assistant in provincial office is more like an all rounder, duties include and not limited to: registry functions, reception, refreshments and venue preparation, transport officer, general admin in registry and in unit, typing whereas an admin assistant in national office focuses only on specific unit/branch.

Pros: You learn everyday as no two days are the same
Cons: No opportunity for promotion
