I am based in a project where we are working to extend the life of the mine, so we need to work in a high speed phase, things can change from our daily routine as we have about 22 contractors who have +- 1200 employees. I am able to deal with clients, partners and staff at all levels, able to work under pressure and meet agreed deadlines with proactive and ability to use my own initiative.. This has gratefully enabled me with a solid foundation in HR and confidence in offering additional support in an organisation to make it more efficient and effective in fulfilling its objectives. I enjoy working with different people where you get to understand different personalities and how to deal with them differently and as individuals. The most challenging aspects of my job is because is a project the scope can change to suit the project objectives so the org structure where change has to be done even though it will be hard for the team.

Becoming a Strategist at Palabora Copper

Typical day includes drawing reviewing proposals against a conceptual framework that we have drawn to guide the work we do. it could be a service provider wanting to pitch. it could be a Municipality manager seeking funding support for the Mayoral initiative. it could be the Chiefs complaining that the business is not addressing their community needs or has favoured another Chief over them. Sometimes I get called upon to chair sensitive values related cases, where there are no clear cut transgressions. This has lately included allegations of racism or a leader who is very productive but walks over dead bodies in terms of not holding company values. My relationship with my peers is one of mutual respect where I'm held in high esteem as a thought leader in the discipline.

Pros: Indeed, I have enjoyed the recognition that I'm a sure candidate for next move to a substantive Executive Level, subject to the availability of the vacancy, which will probably be in 2 year's time when my Executive retires.
Cons: The Transformation and Stakeholder space is fraught with emotions and absence of shared rules of the game, insofar as it interacts with the external (beyond work) role players. it requires extra investment in making time for engagement. And the pace is not always the business like pace. It therefore requires patience.

Good company

Palabora copper is the best company to work for, the incentives and salary is competitive yet comfortable for employees. they take personal development Important for employees. stakeholder engagement is paramount and effective with the communities.

Great to work for in terms the way they work. The duty of care, the ambience, the pressures of work.

Palabora is a greatr employer currently and historically. Job security is high, less likelyhood of retrenchments and VSP's. But less likelyhood of promotion and growth due to their nature of size and stability and so forth.

Pros: Job security is greatest, less likelihood of retrenchment, owned by the communist Chinese who believe less in sudden reaction to the markets.
Cons: Long working hours due to less staffing, lower salary by industry expectations,

σ˜ Calibration,overhaul and maintenance of instruments

I have qualified as an Instrumentation mechanician at Palabora Mining Company and worked as an Instrumentation Mechanician and worked as an Instrumentation Mechanician at Mogalakwena North Concentrator and was later promoted to be an Instrumentation Technician at Mogalakwena North Concentrator and the later joined Palabora Copper and worked as an Instrumentation Technician

Excellent learning curve

In my current role i can describe myself as a servant leader because i get things done through building relationships with people around me. I can easily adjust to any leadership style depending on the environment that i find myself in. In the past six years i have learnt that complex challenges only take simple solutions to be solved and these basic ideas are found within our workforce. I enjoy taking up challenging tasks, roles that get us thinking as a team.

Excellent learning curve

The company had their own way to recruit new trainees which are gonna be placed for a period of 3 years but with no chances of absorbing them in. So it was a good company to work with more especially under good leadership of supervisos and engineer.

Mega Project with a Difference.

Phalaborwa Copper Lift II is a mega project with an estimated cost of $1 billion, one of the largest mining projects in SA at the moment. On completion the life of mine will be extended by 20 years. The owners team consist of highly qualified project professionals and the make up of the contractors inter alia include Chinese, Australians, Germans, etc and others and the cohesion and interactions are great and make the project a challenging but rewarding one. The project is different in many ways with the interference and constraints from the owners but being the link between the owner and project the outcomes are mostly positive.

Pros: To be part of a professional outfit with good prospects to complete the project within budget.
Cons: Geographical location of Phalaborwa is challenging on the family lifes of many.
