Oceana Group Reviews

A very generalist busy position

No two days are the same.Any day is different-meeting new appointees, from operations to office and management. This means contracts, required workplace tools have been setup beforehand, paperwork is completed;company policies and benefits are explained; formal induction programme; salary input submissions; hr reports, hr stats; leave reports; EE meetings; recruitment and recommendations; advise on IR issues;etc. Colleagues are at ease around me; these are relationships of trust. This environment needs time management, patience and a "do-it" attitude.I'm a hands-on person who wouldn't hesitate to do what is needed to get things done.I enjoy the variety as no two days are the same and there is never time to wonder what to do next. The most challenging aspect can be that at times you have to ensure you are au fair with what is priority or urgent, make the distinction and achieve your objectives.

Pros: Opportunities to grow, for the right person
Cons: Inconsistencies regarding salary scales for similar job grades

Learning curve

-Working at Oceana is challenging, you do work as it comes and most of the times you have to go on an extra mile to ensure that work is done. -My relationship with my co-workers is very good, we have good and bad days but we regard one another as family. -I have learned that one is never old to learn something new. I was given a responsibility of being a super user in the HR Helpdesk project where I deal with all HR related queries. -I enjoy working with people, I assist in the Oceana Empowerment Trust project where we deal with different people and help them get their claims. -The most challenging aspect is depending on people to do your job. e.g. when working with salary inputs, people like officers must provide you with the information to include in the input and sometimes they send the information late.

Pros: Great oppotunity of gaining practical experience and making good references.
Cons: No growth

Comprehensive learning experience

I am cordially applying for work within your company. I have currently functioned as a Procurement Graduate within Oceana Group, juggling responsibilities between Projects, Procurement and Operations departments as part and parcel of my graduate programme, under the supervision of the Procurement Manager and Project Administration Manager. I hold a National Diploma in Operations Management from Cape Peninsula University of Technology. I believe that all I have learnt on my graduate programme at Oceana qualifies me the optimum adequacy to be a suitable candidate for any open position, and I am ready to apply my knowledge and accept more responsibilities in my field of work and study. I am young, hardworking, team player, a fast learner and adapt very easily in a new environment. Am well developed in interpersonal communications, computer skills, organizational and leadership skills, and am sure that I can make a positive contribution into the company.

Pros: great opportunity for growth and in depth understanding of the industry
Cons: long working hours

A Typical Day

My day starts at 7 when I log on from home before driving into office. I am in constant contact with the team members - I have a whatsapp group for the Administrative team as well as a separate group for my manager and payroll manager. This group is open for work related topics as well as personal topics. If anything requires immediate attention I am available. My team is responsible for an inbound HR Helpdesk as well. I sit in an open plan area for the HR Shared Services environment. I work closely with the business managers, IT Business Analyst and IT Business partner for system enhancements. My clients HR Business partners, managers (all levels), HR Director etc. The job requires great ability to handle pressure and the ability to communicate across all levels of management and staff. I enjoy that each day holds a different set of challenges that require an ability to make decisions in all situations.

Pros: Change was constant - enjoyed fluid environment that allowed me to update and change processes as required
Cons: Lack of HR positions available

Excellent learning curve

Excellent place to work at, they really go out of their way each and every staff member right up to the CEO to make you welcome and even if you have a personal problem , they go out of their way to assist you whether it's material or financially. They are a real family at Oceana Group a home away from home. Loved working there and I'm not even gone long but I'm already missing them as I've become very close to some of my colleagues at Oceana Group

Pros: Great learning opportunity,
Cons: None really

Great learning curve

A normal working day includes assisting users with problems experienced in their day-to-day operation in the system, mostly on transactional data and config issues.I have worked with group of more than 10 people, have learned listen and quickly grasp detail and communicate clearly as people require different levels of understanding.Relationship with coworkers has been great and built up to friendships. I enjoy discovering new understanding of the systems everyday and turning business information into solutions they work with daily. The biggest challenge has always been having one integrated system to be the solution to business requirements of a group of companies that have different processes and production.

Pros: Wonderful opportunity for strengthening communication skills
Cons: Long hours and weekends

Challenging environment

Great opportunity to work for a company that is part of a big group which has recently celebrated a one hundred years of existence. Being responsible for sites that are not based in one region requires good organisational skills and keeping abreast with what is happening at each site, which is sometimes challenging. The cultures and management styles of colleagues at other regions has equipped me to adapt to different styles and cultures. I have buily great relationships with my internal as well as external stakeholders and that has assisted me in becoming effective in my job

Pros: Working under no supervision
Cons: Decision making is sometimes slower
