Challenging and ever changing environment

Being an academic requires strong discipline with setting of goals and driving own growth. The environment is very independent with very large responsibility resting on superior quality lecturers. Attending to class makes up about 10% of your time. The rest of you time is spent preparing for class, building e-guides and other learning aides for your students as well as preparing various forms of assessments. You have to deal with interruptions well and be able to serve your customers (students) to the best of their abilities, not your own. Most challenging aspect of the job is the large administration burden which consume valuable preparation time. The difficulty of working with two other campuses with equal statuses, creates a challenging environment and could lead to longer lead times for production and decision-making. At best the synergy produces vast amounts of value, at worst, it demoralizes the very soul of any self-respecting individual.

Pros: Very flexible working hours
Cons: Very long extra hours required if one wishes to perform meaningfully

Great IT environment experience

It has been an excellent learning curve to work with customers(Students) with such a great variety, which ensures different day to day challenges. The cooperation between co-workers has been fruitful as we share new and better ways to make our jobs better and more efficient to ensure customer satisfaction. The environment has been of respect and great motivation. My job has taught me how to interact with customers with varying computer challenges and to solve problems under pressure. I enjoy new challenges that I engaged with, that brings out a new perspective and solutions that will be beneficial to the whole department. My most challenging aspect of my job is working with customers who demand services that are beyond my job description.

Pros: A great understanding on the maintenance of an organization as a whole.
Cons: Late working hours

Very good, and you learn to cope in a highly stressful environment

The NWU is a very unique University to work for. The stress level are very high and we have to manage it as HR Practitioners/Business Partners. You work with Senior Managers, Middle level Managers and have to be on your toes when assisting them. Time is of essence and need to happen quick but accurately. I deal with Recruitment and Selection, Performance Management, Mediation, Organisational Development, exiting,On-boarding.I get along well with my co-workers and with my clients. I can be very strict and prefer to adhere to rules and that can anger the clients. i have learned to give the rules to them in a softer manner but still stick to as one has to be consistent.I have learnt come to work and just do your work, add value, and get along with co-workers and clients and keep things professional. I enjoy providing superior knowledge and co-ordinating people and making sure everybody is in line.

Pros: opportunity to move into a different industry
Cons: Politics can be too much at times

What i enjoyed mostly with the job was the idea of being creative and innovative.

I have learned to work in a team and communicate effectively

Working as a laboratory assistant is a job that requires times for preparation of the reagents that the students are going to use in the practical session. Working with other students is an amazing experience because students ask question which requires one to do a research about a particular experiment. Working with my team is great, because whenever I have uncertainties they are there to assist and we always share ideas of how we can practical seasons fun and efficient for other students. I have managed to learn about different characters of students and co-workers.

Pros: Building self confidence in a work field
Cons: preparation of reagents usually takes a lot of time

Excellent with some work to be done

The University is an excellent place to start a career where you will be able to work with different kinds of people as well as different environments. You will learn to handle situations differently and people will sometimes be someone they are not or perceived to be, but you learn to handle it as it comes. It will make you a stronger person as well as a stronger colleague. The university is very supportive and do a very good job at protection of students and personnel.

Pros: Promotion possibilities, support, financial growth abilities.
Cons: None

Excellent academic opportunities.

Motivated and entusiastic about my work. I enjoy doing troubleshooting and problem solving. I also try to think "outside the box" to solve problems or issues. I have a great relationship with my co-workers and work very well in a team as well as on my own. The most chalanging aspects is to always better myself and always push myself to resolve problems faster to ensure that the down time is minimal.

Pros: Great academic opportunities
Cons: Current volitile situations at Universities in South Africa
