Exploring different research fields

Being a research assistant focuses of collecting and analyzing second data based on gangsterism in the Helenvile area of Port Elizabeth. This was the temporary project that wanted to eventual provide interventions to the community. The working hours started from 8:00 in the morning up to 16:00 in the afternoon. The work of the day entailed collecting the data and analyzing it. for example issues like types of offences that often took place in the area, the gender of most victims and offenders, the reasons for the offences. First and foremost, this was the teamwork project, I have learnt that being in the research team is important and it developed me to understand other co-workers ideas and their way of analyzing the collected data. I had a good relationship with my co-workers and I really enjoyed their company.

Pros: Learning curve
Cons: Far from where I stayed

Capturing skills, teamwork, phone ediquency and working under pressure.

The day to day task of my work is to answer the phones, help people with inquiries, capture applications and help clients apply online or use the computers. I need to know everyone in the building and their functions, that's critical in my line of work. I learnt a lot in terms of career growth and capabilities. I enjoy working with people and what fulfils me is the job done and satisfaction people receive when am done helping them.

Pros: being able to study and work your way up in the company.
Cons: extra hours put in during examination, registration and application period.

Equipped with interpersonal skills

The NMMU univeraity usually hires masters and Phd students to help around with students by tutoring and assisting with practicals. I then was employed to help around with students during chemistry practicals. I would for example prepare chemicals and standardise them, run the instruments for them or show them how to prepare samples for analysis (e.g NMR). In many causes I would have to alter procedures when they are not working properly. The students were given just a small stipend. It was more of voluntering more than working. I enjoyed interacting with the students, and getting to transfer all my Chemistry knowledge to those in need. I had a good relationship with all my students and they felt comfortable coming to me for help.

Pros: Opportunity to learn most instruments and learn to trouble shoot them.
Cons: It was more like volunteer work.

Helps working with others.

This experience has fostered a keen interest in all aspects of earth sciences, including groundwater studies, mining and resource processes, and geographical information systems. As well as understanding and taking into account the economic aspects of the geoscience industry. Being exposed to such a learning environments has nurtured in me the desire to continue learning and improving my skills in geological sciences, while not being afraid to diversify my skills set as may be necessary depending on the task at hand and career development. A typical day it work is one where I am constantly assisting students in lab and course work. This environment gives a sense of fulfillment and satisfaction.

Pros: Interaction skills. Learning from others, relearning what you learned as a student.
Cons: Long hour, little pay.
