Great benefits

Working at NHLS is quite pleasant. The benefits are great as they pay 2/3 of your medical aid and contribute to pension fund. Moving up on a pay scale takes a while and new comers could end up earning more than you with less experience and then you still have to train them. Working yourself up is possible if you are motivated and willing and to work hard. Co-workers are friendly however you get your odd few who are lazy,but that comes with any job. I've learnt alot and there's always courses on offer but also dependant on which ones your manager feels they want to send you on.

Pros: Great employee benefits
Cons: Long hours and no payment for overtime.

Academic growth

On a typical workday/week ,run daily quality controls ,register patient samples, housekeeping,run patients samples. Authorise. Call urgent result. Good relationship with coworkers ,avoid conflict. I have learnt yo work independently ad well as a team, That everyone has their own character as well as belief's. I enjoy executing tasks on time,overcoming a challenging task. Challenges:getting off work late

Brilliant learning curve at NHLS

Working at the NHLS can get busy meeting TAT. I have learned to pay attention detail and work with accuracy .I have an excellent relationship with co-workers. I enjoy what I do and value the patient samples we work with. Is to get through a day where machines ( anylisers brakes down).

Pros: Not great opportunity for promotion

Excellent opportunities to study further

Review of the past days work, attend to urgent outstanding matters, particularly regarding urgent diagnostics, meet with post graduate students and senior scientists to discuss project progress, meet with laboratory manager to get update on laboratory situation and address workload and workflow challenges, report major issues to immediate superior as necessary, attend to HR/financial matters, write manuscript protocols. Relationships with coworkers were mostly good and based on mutual cooperation. Issues arose around challenges associated with parastatals. Advanced and completed a PhD while working there Highlights included operating at an international level, including international travel. Challenges included those associated with parastatals in South Africa.

Great training facilities

1. Training in instruments at all GeneXpert Laboratories. 2. Training of all Technicians and Technologists in the use of the GeneXpert technology. 3. Advanced training for super users. 4. Knowledge of other Tuberculosis diagnostic tests or assays. 5. Provide Laboratory support to Technicians and Technologists with assistance in troubleshooting and other related equipment related issues. 6. Liaison between laboratories and equipment suppliers and follow up of all logged issues with suppliers regarding equipment. 7. Site visits for monitoring/evaluation of testing procedures. 8. Constant evaluation and training of TB Diagnostic staff to maintain competence and aptitude. 9. Contribution to the Standard Operating Procedures for GeneXpert roll-out. 10. Update training material in line with technological advancement. 11. National support of GeneXpert

I like to learn new skills but am exceptionally good at coordinating and facilitating events

Placed adverts for all courses run by CDC Atlanta - USA Logistics for all participants and facilitators Arranged sited for courses and accommodation for courses Printing of all material for the courses I learnt to be both patient and compassionate with the participants as most were not well conversed in English Working as a team player was always rewarding for me People like Dr. Thor Elliott changed my perception of people that we work with through his holistic approach

Pros: Meeting people from all over the world and to learn about their cultures etc
Cons: Some times i was away from home for long periods of time and as I am the sole breadwinner my family battled at times with my very sick husband

Good working relationship

I record specimen and answer phone and give out results when required. Work well with my colleagues, it's a nice and enjoyable working environment

Great Exposure and good learning experience with suppliers, colleagues and customers.

Flexible working hours - 9am-6pm or 8am-5pm or 7am-4pm Friendly Staff Learnt to communicate via business and in office learnt how be more professional and get more organized. the opportunities for growing can be difficult. Studying further and training courses are offered by the company,
