National Nuclear Regulator Reviews

First exposure to government

I work for the nuclear regulator who have the mandate to protect the public from the effects of radiation. My work involves assessing activities taking place at license holders for safety. My organization is severely challenged in the management area and are not able to provide me the support I require for doing my job. I have been able to receive a lot of exposure in my current job. Working for the regulator is equivalent to working in a patent office. A lot of submissions come over my desk and I am able to know what is out there technologically. The relations with co-workers can be improved! It is a challenge to navigate the company politics. The challenging aspect of the work is that at time s you have to develop new requirements for the license holders if the work is new.

Pros: Exposure to innovative technology
Cons: no support from management

My employer

Typical work day: - Meeting with my team to catch up on weekly activities, attend adhoc meetings with project managers, EXCO meetings once a months. Spend more time in meeting there is normally little time for creative thinking. Manage project activates and external consultants. -Relationship with co-workers I work very well with my co-workers, my job depends on other people which forces me to form relationships with relevant people in the organisation -Lessons learned I have learned to appreciate the industry I operate in and understand the business environment before making changes. That has made me to not only implement project methodologies without understand the impact it will have on the organisation - the most challenging aspect is to get buy-in when implementing new processes

Pros: Flat structure reporting directly to CEO
Cons: No flexibility
