A day at Kansai Plascon

A typical day at Kansai Plascon would start at 7.30/7.45. Review emails, ensure training schedule/plan is in place and executed accordingly. Work on L & D projects. Attend meetings, discuss projects and implement next steps. Ensure L & D requirements and progress is discussed with Business Units. Ensure Business Unit's L & D expectations and requirements are understood and supported by the right solutions. Still have fun and break away for the odd lunch or coffee with a colleague. What I've learnt is how to handle the constant change. Endurance and to never stop doing what you are passionate about. Small things can bring about big changes. I enjoy the challenge, the knowing I can implement something and make a difference or be part of a group of people who are loyal to the company. The most challenging is consulting with the business, identify their learning needs, but then not to be able to accommodate their needs due to financial constraints.

Pros: Close to home. Flexibility in terms of family responsibilities. Get recognized for input and talents. Well renumerated.
Cons: Conflicting information and communictation within Business Units. Red tape and hierachy. Internal process frustrations

Working Conditions

Working for KP is such a great pleasure , team work is the culture that has been inculcated through out the organization. Each day is different to the previous day due to production matters that arise each day. What keeps me grounded within the organization is planning and time management, I ensure that I filter these attributes through to my direct reports. My relationship with my team is at a level whereby I can fully trust their judgments and decision they make within the organization. What I have learnt in the past 14 years within the organization is that hard work determines your future and lastly I have learned that the people that reports to you can either make you or break you. What I have enjoyed the most was to meet organizational goals and creating a platform for my subordinates to grow within the organization. The most challenging aspect of the job is to satisfy everyone needs as we are a very diverse team.

Pros: Diversity, Strong organisational culture, growth opportunities
Cons: Internal politics , Silos

Good learning experience

The challenges of learning about paint and it's processes were very good. We meet and build relationships with architects and designers on a daily, assisting them with colours and specifications. Which i quite enjoy as an interior designer myself its great to see what is going up out there. Going to site to do technical assessment was a great learning curve. The people are full with great knowledge and guidance. The most challenging aspects of the job are relying on other departments in order to service your clients timeously. Due to the low staff turn over people find it difficult to service the whole department by themselves as we know in this industry these are often rather urgent. That can be a thin line between a sale and losing the customer.

Pros: Knowledge one gains on painting different substrates
Cons: disappointing support structure

Small Secretarial department

Initially an excellent learning curve. Very diverse as it incorporates IP management as well as a small portion of compliance and governance. The company is going through a number of changes which makes the job more interesting. I have a limited opportunity to learn more about legislation of African countries in which we operate which I thoroughly enjoy. This position incorporates some administrative accounts, budget preparation and the like. I have an excellent working relationship with my co-workers and senior management. Generally the work has become mundane and uninteresting with little new challenges.

Pros: Flexibility when I need to take care of a personal matter on occasion.
Cons: No opportunity for promotion due to the small size of the department. No more challenges as major work is dealt with by the group CoSec.

Rewarding career

Typicall working day started at 07h45 and ended at 16h30, depending where you were working and what you were doing. At the start of the working day, a team meeting is held to decide on priorities and urgencies for the day as well as discuss yesterday's performance in relation to agreed KPI's. Arising action item are added to the list of the day's priorities. Progress charts are maintained to show status daily, weekly or monthly. My relationship with my co-workers was positive, the majority of my co-workers showed respect for me as well as my abilities or contribution to the business. I have learnt that keeping a clear and a level headed approach, enables one to think about problems and issues as they arise, emotions actually perpertuate and magnify problems.

Pros: Great working career
Cons: Change in business ownership

Strive for Perfection, endurance through daily challenges

A great organisation it once was with growth & development opportunities for all staff members. As Sir Richard Branson says, if you look after your staff, they will look after your customers. a sad but true fact, however, with all the current negativity a general work day with my colleagues is filled with enthusiasm and our daily challenges which we strive to achieve. Teamwork and a proper support structure are vital. The most challenging in the trade department is to finalise the service offering that we market on a daily basis. it always seems to be a struggle when we have to issue the guarantees at the end of the day as the project consultants are unfortunately overwhelmed with work and sadly cant make it to all sites timeously. Although along with the challenges comes a lot of victories and we celebrate them, as a team. Co-workers are supportive of each other and we strive for perfection.

Pros: exposure to a more corporate environment, Training facilities, Great benefits
Cons: Long Working Hours, No scope for growth, New management structure which does not have the interests of the staff at hand
