Leading for the betterment of staff

The JRA is a busy, challenging environment that has to ensure that consumers are delivered the level of customer service they desire and that they are aware, through extensive online and offline campaigns, of changes that affect them. A typical workday involves working with my team generating content, measuring the performance of yesterday and communicating with our internal depots and departments as well as external stakeholders to ensure that we we perform as required. I have learned a great deal about the management and production of content. I have learned more being a Jack of All Trades have to jump between design, editorial, Content Management Systems, live events, budget, supply chain management, etc.

Pros: Large company working across the entire city of Johannesburg - extensive knowledge gained.
Cons: Limited opportunities for promotion

Excellent learning curve

JRA is a dynamic organisation which exist to serve the community with Roads ,bridges and storm water designs, constructions and maintenance of related infrastructure. My typical day involves lot of interaction with various stakeholders being Executive Management, oversight Committees in the delivery of the Internal Audit Plan. Understanding client challenges and sharing my insight in striving to improve the control environment and ensuring company objectives are achieved.I learnt a lot in terms of balancing of priorities, managing stakeholders, budgets managements, people management. What i enjoy the most is making adequate and value adding recommendations and seeing them being taken seriously and being implemented. Challenging aspect of the job include breakdown in relationships with clients, not meeting Committee expectations or inadequate support from the Commitee, Non achievement of the Audit Plan

Pros: Great opportunity for interaction with the Board, the Shareholder, the Community
Cons: Too unionised organisation with labour disputes impating a lot on service delivery

An internship programme for Civil Engineers

I interact with Town Planners and Professional Engineers and other Civil Engineers on a daily basis. My department dealt with the Planning Phase of any construction project in the Johannesburg Region that had an impact on our Roads and Bridges. This included the Town Planning procedures such as the establishing of a Township or Rezoning (changing rights) of an existing Township up until the approving of construction drawings. My relationship with my co-workers is excellent. Its a great working environment where everyone is willing to help each other as we're all a team trying to achieve a common goal which is excellent service to the people of Johannesburg. The challenges of this job is the workload that must be completed in a specific required time. Some submission take longer to review than others but they all have the same time frame to be completed.

Pros: Great opportunity to interact with engineers from different consultants
Cons: Not enough design experience for a young engineer like me

Experienced with necessary qualifications

On daily basis I have learned that it is very important to love what you do. This is to make ensure that if you do not know something you let other people know in order to assist you. Interacting with other co workers it help me a lot because I am able to know what other department do and how that have an impact in the company. I have learnt that at work as colleagues we are there to give productivity or to offer our services to the company in order to give full maximum ability to achieve set goals. I am very friendly and happy environment makes me happy and do my job relaxed, well being of others is very important to me. I have found out that in my job, most of presentation are done by management and it was difficult for me to present where management is listening. If it is possible I would to get more opportunity where I will be able to grow in my profession.

Pros: Opportunity for growth
Cons: Hard worker
