Excellent opportunity to gain work experience

A typical day at IkamvaYouth begins in the morning, its an 8 to 12 am job on a Saturday, but during the Winter school I got there at 9 and worked until 4 pm. I would like to describe the relationship with my colleagues as a professional one,we work well(good working relationship) and we were taught to work in teams to help each other out, through this experience i was able to improve my communication skills as I often come out as a shy person. I enjoy being there,i met amazing people which we share similar goals, interests with and more than anything i love the working environment i am in because I'm comfortable,i look forward to going there every time. The most challenge part about this job is getting learners to concentrate on the lesson i am giving to them but, i always try my best to make sure that i keep them engaged and also instilling discipline is always an issue but, with the help of my colleagues it works out i the end.

Pros: Great opportunity to interact with new people and team work
Cons: Lack of additional study material since most of the knowledge we have is outdated

Great Opportunity and Starter Job

Intense admin and making phone calls, coordinating events for the learners and also sourcing them. I really enjoy seeing the success of something that I had planned out or together with a colleague and the most challenging part of the job would be balancing out all the data needed quickly because we are only a team of 2 per branch, sometimes dealing with learners, event coordinating and capturing Data becomes a challenge to balance out. Great learning curve for me, I now know my strengths and weaknesses and the challenges I face daily are things in which help me with my personal development as well.

Pros: Lots of on the job training and exposure to different tasks which touch on almost every department that a normal profit company would have. Also, they are a very empathetic group of young leaders'
Cons: Long hours. Sometimes you are over worked.

Youthful organisation, engaging in robust discussions on how to deliver quality tutoring services to township learners, so they can pull themselves and each other out of poverty through education.

Very good facilities and reasonable working hours

The IkamvaYouth model draws from a large and growing pool of volunteers made up of students (from nearby universities) and local professionals. The organisation's sustainability is driven by ex-learners who gain entrance to tertiary institutions and return to tutor. More than half of the volunteers at longer-established branches are ex-learners and over 80% of the Khayelitsha management committee comprises ex-beneficiaries. IkamvaYouth thus provides the additional advantage of allowing ex-IkamvaYouth learners to be agents of change – from beneficiary to benefactor.

Pros: exposure to a range of opportunities
Cons: lack of team work, which discourages other colleagues.
