It was educational but not a good place...

Working at HP On Campus at University of Johannesburg, you had to be self motivated in that the pay was bad but the experience in terms of students bringing challenging issues to troubleshoot was educational and fun for me, because I handled most of the technical jobs that came in and some of which were just new and complicated but I always managed to pull through most of the time. So working there was fun in terms of the actual work (fixing stuff and troubleshooting network issues) but that's about it though, nothing more. I learned to be more responsible in terms of facing an issue. I used to be scared of that but since I got the experience I needed, taking responsibility of an issue doesn't phase me anymore. The most challenging aspect of being a technician from my perspective was the pressure that you get when everyone looks to you to fix a certain problem. Especially if that problem is a time sensitive one and also might require research in order to fix it.

Great skills learned

Working at the head office where call centre is also based, I learned skills to deal with customers. The atmosphere is relaxed and easy and working with people from different ethnic groups was also a learning curve in as far at relating with each other and learning about the religious practises. Working for a manager who dealt with students kept me on my toes. Meetings would be set and cancelled just as quickly. I learnt to assure investors that they are important even though meetings were cancelled and their schedules were disrupted. My typical day involved keeping the dairy updated, answering and directing calls to relevant people. Booking accommodation and taking minutes.

Pros: no opportunity for growth
Cons: 5 days and normal working hours.

Great learning experience

- Better Understanding of technical support - Enjoyed The travelling - Learned that being a team player is key to archive a lot of goals and meet deadlines
