HL Hall and Sons Reviews

Good exposure to group accounting

This multinational company is a successful family business. The head office is small (10 staff in the office) and everyone has their own private offices, but if we include the subsidiaries and associates, it has over 1000 staff. It’s a good place to work in, the colleagues are a close knit community, that is exciting to work in. The downside is that being so small, there’s no systems in use and most tasks are manual and paper based. It may be good for learning, but I’m mid-career, worked for two of the Big 5 banks over the past 14 years, and this role is less challenging as the most time is spent on the data capture role and not enough time for data analysis. I’m the only one in our team of four who has a CIMA background, the other three are CAs with an audit background, so I have learnt a lot on the Audit side, implementing control procedures as well as reviewing financial statements.

Pros: Great learning experience
Cons: Limited growth

Great work experience

The company gave me great exposure in the production and quality assurance of export quality of avocados. The working hours are not that long, it's a typical 7 to 4 job, although on some days extra hours are expected to but put in of which are compensated. The packhouse team is very cooperative and we are able to reach our daily targets before the end of the day. Sometimes work gets delayed due to a malfunctioning in one of the machines, but we are able to make up for lost time. The working areas are clean at all times, which makes it a healthy working environment for everyone.

Pros: Healthy working environment
Cons: Work delays due to mulfunctioning of machines at times
