GoldFields South Deep Reviews

This is a summary of me as an individual

It's a challenge to work in a mining environment. One needs to be tough in order to survive however, you do learn alot from a hostile environment such at the mines. The most valuable thing I have learned at GoldFields is to never change for people and always stick to your standards as well as values. I have been observing alot in DC hearings, plenaries as well as safety meetings. I have rotated through all the HR departments of which some I was more hands on. One day at GoldFields feel like a week. It's hard work and it's straining but the department that I was working for was more like a family. We are a small department that is more like a family. We appreciate each other and work well as a team. We enjoy lunch together as well as birthdays. Goldfields has the kind of environment that prepares one mentally for anything.

Pros: you get to understand how gold is made
Cons: underground has more growth than surface

Working in the mining industry

The mining industry is a very harsh environment to work in. Since I've been on the mine I've learned how to survive in hard times. It is difficult to start working in a company that is so big with +- 4000 employees. I have seen a lot of mistakes as well as identified problems of which I know now what the consequences are if not addressed with proper diagnoses. What I love most about my department is the family bond that we have. We have lunch every now and then, we support each other in case of death in the family, we believe that we must cover each other as well as provide help in the time of need and we make time to talk as a department about things that's bothering us. Most of me and my co-workers have a strong relationship both working and personal. We fight together through the challenges and we support as well as teach each other.

Pros: The money is good
Cons: Not much growth on surface in terms of furthering your career

Learning Curve

Working in the mining industry is a difficult task. The mining industry can shape you or break you. Dealing with unions in the mining industry is a very difficult thing to have on ones plate. To deal with miners in general is difficult. Recruitment is huge, Disciplinary hearing are too much and the administration is overwhelming.

Pros: The money is good
Cons: Not much growth on surface in terms of furthering your career
