Gauteng Department of Health Reviews

What i have learned in corporate communication

Working at the Gauteng Department of Health was fascinating, as newly graduate I learnt a lot in communications. My daily duties were daily media monitoring every morning and I would write articles for the monthly news bulletin. Took photographs for some of the articles I wrote and I would draft media statements once in a while. My mentor was very helpful and he has told me that no matter how educated you are one has to always have a room for learning from colleagues. Learned that in a workplace one has to put their differences aside and be tolerant of other n matter the circumstance. enjoyed working in the field ,as I got to meet fellow Journalists and other people in the Media industry.it was a bit challenging as I was trained to be a journalist and when I got to a work place it was Public Relation. Its good being the face of the company and doing everything that is required of you.

Pros: i got to learned a lot about corporate communication ,combining it with journalism is the best thing ever.i believe im an execellent communicator
Cons: early hours and long hours for important fuction

Excellent learning curve

My company is a public hospital therefore it's very busy from the morning till afternoon at knock off time. But the workload is bearable because we work as team. I have learnt to be patient with difficult patients even though it's hard at times but seeing a difficult patient leave the pharmacy with a smile gives me pleasure. The most challenging part of my job it's those extremely difficult patients that just want to blame us for their sickness because I work with HIV positive patients.

Pros: Normal working hours ( 07h30 to 16h00)
Cons: No area for professional growth

No promotion opportunities

The department is congested with no approved organizational structure, there is no career growth nor promotion opportunities. The re a clear learning or training and development opportunities. No good retention strategies in place There is a room for improvement in terms of work experience since the Department is one of the biggest in the public sector

Pros: good opportunity for gaining experience
Cons: no promotion opportunities

Great learning and management opportunity

I enjoy my job as it has given me the opportunity to both be in the academic world and management skills. I enjoy teaching students as well as supervising them clinically. Being a clinic manager of the orthodontic department at Wits university has given me the ability to develop management skills and to learn how to work with a team in order to develop a successful practice. My day at work is quite hectic as I have to be a lecturer as well as a manager of a department which requires a lot of administrative work as well. Although it is challenging I enjoy my work and it gives me the opportunity to develop my capabilities.

Pros: Great learning and leadership opportunity
Cons: Doing the work of 2 people

Excellent learning environment

Friendly working environment. Great team work and communication. Weekly lectures about current techniques or issues accounted where everyone can give their input. Workload of about 40-45 patients treated in one linac. Old linac units(primus) which can make the workflow slow. I'm from Port Elizabeth, when I started working there the people made me feel welcomed and at home.

Pros: Variety of deases being treated therefore different techniques seen
Cons: Old treatment units and applications being used. No opportunity for promotion

Excellent learning curve

I work at one of the satellite pharmacies in the hospital so on a typical day we see about 100 patients and because we work so well together as a team we sometimes compromise our lunch breaks so that we can help everyone before they start complaining. There are challenges of course like some colleagues don't pitch for work or are there but they just disappear not knowing where they are. Besides working in a team I have learnt to be an independent worker and because I work at a satellite pharmacy I am like the manager of that pharmacy cause I work with assistants so as a pharmacist you have to assume that role of a manager in such cases. I enjoy that the environment is relaxed . We laugh a lot with my colleagues.

Pros: Normal working hours ( 07h30 to 16h00)
Cons: No area for professional growth
