Etulu lifts Reviews

My first assignment in a construction industry. Challenging yet fullfiling.

At Etulu Lifts my role was more supervisory in that I had to make sure that the artisans and engineers report at the site where either installations, maintenance or modernisation of lifts are commissioned. 98% of these subordinates were African males. Role included that i administer payroll for all personnel. At times commanding respect was a challenge but yet achievable. Constantly having to remind subordinate of Code of Conduct as well as reprimanding and taking disciplinary measures where behaviour didn't alter desirably in line with company ethics. In this role the dynamics forced me to adopt a sturn yet approachable character in order to achieve a win-win situation. The 3 directors rely on me to drive the talent search and management processes. Keeping myself abreast of IR regulations is critical since the company doesn't have a fully fledge HR department. Assisting the HR Director with recruitment processes is a skilled I had to learn in a very short space of time.

Pros: Opportunity to acquire permanent placement
Cons: Long working hours and predominantly male

Working in a predominantly male industry has been a learning curve for me.

Setting up the HR function and facilitating the group benefits. This has resulted in the ability to both attract and retain valuable members. Daily activities includes putting together proposals and tendering documentation, updating annual compliance aspects with various bodies, capturing purchasing invoices, expenses and overall payments for SARS vat return, following up on invoices and payments, travel arrangements for directors and executives, diary management for all the directors. Ensuring that adequate staff/artisans/engineer are on site and that company OHS procedures are adhered to. Month-end payroll function, ensuring that UIFs, PAYEs, Provident funds are deducted according and paid to the right accounts. The challenges include older man reporting to a relatively young female where at times adherence to company code of conduct and enforcing is tricky but achievable.

Pros: Opportunity to learn new things daily
Cons: Long hours especially during month-end and tendering times.
