A stepping stone

Work begins at 08:00 and finishes at 17:00 although longer hours are the norm due to the business of the nature of the work involved. I get along with most office colleagues and I am required to liaise with a multitude of vested parties from other departments who contribute to the overall design of the project. I have been fortunate in that I have forced myself into many areas of the design process as well as design management so that I have better understanding of the work involved and that I can almost work individually to complete a project deliverable. The multitude of disciplines involved in line design and national transmission grid support means that you are exposed to not just office work but also on site solutions provision for complex problems especially during construction phase. As mentioned before, there is no room for growth and with the current employment embargo currently in effect at Eskom changing departments is very difficult in order to gain experience elsewhere in the company structure.

Great place to work at, making the difference.

A good company culture, big organisation. Making significant impact on our economy and South Africa. I have more than years working experience in environmental impact assessment (EIA) and environmental management system (ISO 14001). Some of my duties are to conduct environmental impact assessment, develop environmental management plans, develop waste management strategy for the region, ensure compliance to legal and other applicable requirements, conduct incident investigations and environmental assurance audit. I helped Koeberg Nuclear Power Station to obtain Accreditation for ISO 14001 and NOSA Certification. I also helped Eskom Distribution to obtain ISO 14001 accreditation in August 2014. Eskom Distribution is currently implementing OHSAS 18001. I also manage budget and supervise staff, appoint SHEQ consultants & environmental control officer and engage with various stakeholders both internally and externally.

Excellent opportunity to compliment and gain on the existing staff

Technical environment which is very challenging and mind stimulating, it offers continuous opportunity of learning new things from a diverse people. Daily administration of work of project management, contract management, tracking of materials and project progress feedback.

An immacable experience

I am tasked in managing and overseeing of several principal contractors’ safety management in Medupi Power Station Project. My responsibilities includes among many, Monthly SHE audits; Incident management, Dispute management among contractors; Site inspections; Coordinating of SHE committee meeting; Liaising with contractor package managers to facilitate progress meeting and resolving of any SHE issues that arises on site.

Pros: Great learning experience on massive project
Cons: Insufficient supervision

Well relaxed but hard work is required by top management at all the times. We work as a team with every day struggles that each team faces. I have learned how to be good manager one of these days.
