Engen Petroleum Limited Reviews

Growth is Limited at Engen

A typical work day consists of sending out prices, performing analytical review of the prices and news and presenting during strategic workshops. Additionally derivatives (Swaps) are taken out based on discussion with physical traders on the deals which they close out with counterparties. Advice is given to these traders as to how best to confirm pricing on their deals. Assistance is provided to operations and finance teams in terms of the use of the Allegro (newly implemented) system of which I am a Super User. This requires me to be extremely approachable to all the teams as well as an expert in my field. Always learning due to various job moves - finance, operations, trading, business analyst and then derivatives trader. The most challenging aspects of my role is to come up with strategies to accommodate the company's competitive advantage in terms of importing and exporting refined products. This is also the part of my job that I most enjoy.

Pros: Flexibillity
Cons: Company ethos of not recognising qualifications and placing more emphasis on 'experienced' staff.

What i have done on my Graduate trainee programme up until i was converted to be permanent

SAP ABAP Developer - programming SAP ABAP, debugging, creating and modifying reports OO concept creating interfaces super classes as well as sub classes. using remedy, solution manager and charm for peer review and rating. I was also involved in an upgrade and testing, creating ALV Reports. SAP CRM Consulting - I did config related to sales and customer convenience, which also involved attending queries that were related to call centre, agents and normal users access and profile config. Some other technologies or programming languages I have been using over the years in varsity: Java, sql, c++, c#, HTML, php, asp.net, vb.net where we developed most projects both front end and web-based. Challenging aspects of the job was understanding the business processes as an overview of the business area that you need to make changes to, but that i'm getting used to it by time .

Pros: great exposure to sap system landscape
Cons: getting the good understanding of the business overview and processes

Excellent learnig curve

I love working for my current company in Petroleum industry but have now changed management within my department. Its true when they say that people don't leave the company but they leave managers. That's exactly what's currently happening to me. In our department they are 2 ladies and 40 males we work very well together. We like a family unit, we so close that we have a tradition of celebrating each others birthdays and have a picnic once a year with our families. I have studied cost and management accounting and I didn't have no technical knowledge however with engaging with the guys I have had to learn a few basic terminology and technical information. No one day is the same in Facilities so that is what I enjoy most. I have learned a lot in various genres on how to deal with people in various levels.

Pros: Great company
Cons: No opportunity for growth

Brilliant Energy

I was supply accounting manager since 1 November but then was promoted four days later to financial accounting and credit manager. The latter promotion is effective 1 December, however since the previous manager had vacated the position I have been performing the tasks related to this role. I don’t have a specific list of responsibilities however I can tell you that I manage five people collectively responsible for the collection and disbursements of cash receipts and payments respectively, reconciliation of all general ledger accounts related to our division (supply trade and optimisation) (includes intercompany and affiliate accounts), the approval of credit terms, credit limits and credit granted to customers, resolution of non routine issues and transactions and approval of credit controller activities in the ETRM system (implementation of which I was a business analyst) and SAP system operational within our division.

Pros: Individual technical growth prospects
Cons: No promotion / opportunity growth exists. Company on severe cost cutting initiatives up until 2020. Long working hours without additional compensation

See this as a new opportunity to grow myself and have my eye set on executive opportunities

A typical day will include the management of the team. Department are responsible for shared services reporting (on KPI's, SLA) and other financial dashboard items to the governance forum (consisting of all Finance Business Controllers and Operating General Managers) as well reports for the financial director. As a senior member in the team, I am responsible for the implementation of strategies set by the board. This will include conducting workshops, projects plans and implementation & monitor of the plans. Current team consists of 8 members and it include both IS and finance experts. I like working in a team and it is my main driver for in all projects that I'm responsible for or part of. Most challenging in the role is not so much the work itself but the buy-in of staff when busy with new projects

Pros: Opportunity for promotion
Cons: Nothing at the moment

Excellent learning curve

As a maintenance planner my duty is ensure that the monthly job cards are released, printed, executed and close on time. Track and monitor the maintenance spend against the budget and inform the relevant stakeholders. Update the maintenance dashboard. Assistance engineers with projects by creating purchase requisitions, liaise with the contractors/supplies and goods receipt the tax invoices. Update maintenance plans and create corrective maintenance job cards. Manage contract. I have an excellent work relationship with all my colleagues as this is an important part of team work. I have learnt the overall Petroleum processes from receiving crude oil to get to the final product being petrol/diesel/grease and that everyone’s job is very important and to respect my colleagues and always work as a team.

Pros: Great opportunities for growth
Cons: A lot of traveling

Able to adapt to changing enviroment very quickly

A work day consists of making decisions regarding affiliate credit statuses, supply process enhancement and advice to junior level reportees on accounting transactions. Relationship with co-workers is quite integrated - its a family type of atmosphere. I have learnt how important communication is across departments, how important it is to break down silo's. I enjoy a pressured type of deadline chase. eg. month end and year end. Job's most challenging aspects: trying to explore more strategic views within the working capital space without being inhibited by senior management

Pros: On the job training is excellent
Cons: Growth prospects are limited
