Eastern Cape Department of Health Reviews

Excellent learning curve

My scope of work ensures that there are patient food to 14 hospitals, 144 Clinics, 5 Community health Clinics (CHC) and 4 sub-district municipalities. The entire procurement of the aforesaid institutions is lead and manage by myself and the entire staff under my supervision. I was recently appointed by Head Office to lead a secretariat to procure a Personal Protective Equipment for the entire province, which I did with zeal and diligent with no procurement irregularities found by the report of Special Investigative Unit (SIU). I am a good leader among my subordinate which i strive to inspire and mentor them in a right direction. Furthermore is to ensure that there are contracts for all commodities for ease of use. The most challenging aspects of my job is lack of support from your executive whiles you deal with political influence and trying to repel corruption within the department.

Pros: Great opportunities for promotions are prevalent
Cons: I work long hours especially during the time of tender evaluation and adjudications..

Developed a strong GIS background, and the ability to work without supervision.

Within the department, I have not only developed immensely my GIS knowledge and skills, but the ability to work independently. I have learnt to manage my time and tasks according to schedule. Not only this, but my interpersonal skills have increased making it easier to understand and work with people from all ethnic backgrounds. Moving from the private sector to the public was a major challenge for me. The way things are done in the public sector requires a lot of discipline in order to ensure professional development. My experience can be summarized in one simple phrase: Continued Climax.

Pros: Exposure to multiple disciplines which GIS can be incorporated.
Cons: Delayed professional growth
