Senior Process Layout Draughtsman

I am a Senior Layout Draughtsman that started as a mechanical draughtsman, thereafter working in various departments, including mechanical, structural, and piping. Over the years I’ve learned the different design principles of these departments and combined this knowledge in the layout department to ensure the process plants are designed to the standards and requirements of process engineers and that operatibility and maintainability is met in all aspects, thus ensuring the safety of manufacturers and operators is maintained at all times. My experience has given me the confidence to solve problems on a layout, combining the knowledge I’ve aquired in each department to come up with feasible and adequate solutions.

35 years engineering experience in the mining idustry

I've been in the mining industry since 1984 and worked myself up through the ranks from an electrical apprenticeship to a certificated professional engineer. I have two govermnent certificates of competence (electrical and mechanical) and am registered at Ecsa. I was section engineer, assistant engineering manager and engineering manager on different deep level gold mines in South Africa. I was also involved in multiple shaft sinking projects. (Konkola 4 shaft, Platreef, Afplats, Kgalagadi, Thubilisha, Burnstone, Bakubung). I have extensive mine winder and vertical shaft experience. I served on at least three marginal mines under extreme conditions. I've been invloved in several mining projects, (brown and green fields). I've also conducted numerous feasibility studies.

Good learning curve learn more new things

It feels good learning new things everyday, friendly people to work with helping one another ,used to work with low profile machines now at DRA it's only high profile machines big components, to work out on the sun or underground on a confined space

Pros: Still busy with my studies to become junior engineer
Cons: was working 10 hour shift day and night the 30th week off

Excellent learning curve

Structural engineer, I enjoy all that is entailed in the civil engineering field and learning new concepts and engineering principles that enable me to better understand my functions as a structural engineer

A place you'll grow only if you are wishing

my previous workplace they do not compromise safety,it was always a safe place to work at.my former co-workers they we're always active participant,we always team up and do the job,they always gave me a platform to lead.They taught me to be active and independent,especially safety.nothing challenging if you love this job of mine.

Pros: promotion depend on the candidate if they wanna grow.
Cons: every industry long hours are due depend on the situation

Currently Frustrating

Working in the Mining industry the last couple of years has been difficult. Clients don't have money but still demand 100% service. Being a contract worker and getting paid per hour does not help either.

Pros: Currently not a lot
Cons: Long working hours, no happy medium
