Dept of Home Affairs Reviews

Learning in the department

I joined the department from 2009 as a contract worker. And ever since my job was so fulfilling in such a way that, waking up every morning and knowing that you have the capability of putting a smile on somebody else face. An opportunity to serve your country with excellence and pride. Truth is you cannot make everybody happy but what matters most is that you did all that you could to ensure a smile on their faces. And also learning that its not everybody who will be happy because of your service because over and above you have people who just wish to corrupt officials as well as do things wrongly. So it takes a lot to stand for what you believe in and be patriotic. I enjoy working in the department because i had the opportunity to grow as an individual. Learn to work with people as well as to serve. I have worked in different sections to date and thus giving me a clearer overview of how the work is interwoven.

Pros: Rotation to different sections and learning more work
Cons: Slow growth

It is the good department and have learnt a lot

Working at the Department of Home affairs has given me lots of exposure in terms of service delivery. Working with people on a daily basis is very challenging and it need one to be friendly and patriotic to your country. I love what am doing and I have a great relationahop with my subordinate as we have to share ideas on the daily basis on how bets to assist our clients as we meet new challenges daily. My current job includes among others to sulercise officials that arrest, investigate and transfer illegal immigrants daily, the challenge is that we have to operate with minimum resources as the challenge facing by the government. But never the less is a good and challenging job, I just want to expose my self to other part of the work environment and I love meeting new challenges that need my educational intelligence.

Pros: There is less opportunity for promotion
Cons: Minimum resources

Learning curve

It has been an honor to work for this department. I have uncounted a lot of challenges which have enabled me to grow. I now have vast experience from working directly with the public as well us working at the back office and ensuring that the people in the front line have the resources required to perform their duties. It has not always been good with colleagues but I have learnt to put my work first and strive for a good relationship to ensure that service delivery is not hampered.

Pros: experience as you rotate sections
Cons: Its hard to get a promotion

The life of a immigartion officer

the pressure and public are a driving force at the dept of home affairs, daily tasks such as tracing, arresting, detention, prosecution and deportation of illegal foreigners are what makes immigration so interesting and at times painful, the mere fact that you are separating families takes its toll on a person, no matter how hard you are. the admin part of it is just as interesting because we open and capture files for every person we deal with, including fingerprinting and filing

Pros: keeping the country safe
Cons: safety risk

Open mindedness

I have worked in various industries, from banking to bargaining councils and find myself now in Government. The exposure to Public finance management, Treasury rules and budgetary control for me is another learning curve and tool sharpener. Being in such an environment with such a large and varied staff compliment has taught me a number of things. Patience, embracing diversity, different cultures and beliefs. Also, the different approaches from different minds often leading to team work and easing work loads.

Pros: Exposure to governmental policies
Cons: Limited promotion opportunities
