Department of Rural Development And Agrarian Reform Reviews

It's been an interesting journey and I have learned a lot.

The relationship with workers is good and especially for me because of my personality . The major flaw is the backward mentality that resides in some employees especially those who are less educated and older. It would be great to come up with new ideas to improve the department but the senior officials are stuck in their stagnant ways. However there are 21st century blooded officials who have taught us the field of Communication and what it takes to thrive in the field. The most challenging aspect is the travelling but it is enjoyable most of the times Enjoy most writing stories about people from rural areas who need resources A typical day at work depends on your component which range from Photography, Video Production, Written Communication and Customer Services.

Pros: Learning a lot about the field and acquiring new skills
Cons: Little opportunity for appointment and backward attitude

Very good learning opportunity

It’s really a conducive environment, daily routines would include receiving and recording of samples from clients. Samples vary as we do soil, water and plant analysis. Everyone is always eager and hard working and very supportive. Learnt a lot actually, careful handing and seriousness when it comes to working on clients’ samples in realizing the importance of results they get from us play a huge role in decision making when it comes to that particular farm or company. Preparations and running of samples were most fun, mixing of chemicals and running different instruments. Things like how environmental factors have effects in nature of the soil and it’s longevity. Challenging aspects come into play when we tend to receive a large number of samples which would entail double the effort would be required to reach the target ensuring that the client doesn’t wait a long time in receiving their results.

Pros: Great opportunity for learning
Cons: Lack of enough equipment

Experience gained

My job title is a chemistry intern which means I work in the lab everyday analysing samples. I work close with other interns, lab technicians and lab assistants. A typical work day starts at 8:00 where I start with sample preparation and analysis. On a good day I analyse about 27 soil samples or finish them off the next day. Chellenging part is when there are too many samples coming in that need to be analysed urgently and when all the glassware and other utensils are dirty or are being dried but through team work all the work is done.

Pros: great place to start
Cons: no outdoor work

Working without supervision of my mentor

-My work day start at 08:OO ,I weigh about 40 samples prepare digestion reagent and peppett 4,2ml to each samples then place in a fume cupboard overnight. If requested by a client do moisture content of the samples. -I easily adapt to new environment that makes it easy for me to have a good working relationship with my co-workers. -I enjoy meeting new faces when receiving samples from clients. -We do 2 months rotations helping the admin clerk to do data capturing. -There are times we have so many samples coming and clients demanding results,i manage to calm them down and explain to them how long the process takes.

Pros: non
Cons: worked for two weeks on weekends, due to backlog

Great way of learning to deal with people

Working at Department of Rural Development and Agrarian Reform has been a great learning curve. I have learnt to work under pressure and deliver on time as I am the only one who is working at ICT section. Assisting end users has created a good relationship between me and them because I have to always serve them to the best of my ability. The most challenging aspect of my job is when I have to be out of work, it leaves me frustrated because I am worried about my users and who is going to assist them.

Pros: A great learning curve
Cons: Lack of infrastructure.

General work experience

Worked from 08:00 to 17:00 on GIS projects, attended workshops to teach local farmers best farming practices. One certain days attended meetings for DRDAR and DRDLR around Eastern Cape. We also did Data Capturing for trial studies on different cultivars of maize. I had a great relationship with co-workers, always positive and optimistic. Learnt to go beyond my comfort zone and to respect everyone. Going on field trips to collect soil samples from different towns and villages is what I enjoyed the most, seeing different people from different places and their way of life. Public speaking at meetings was the most challenging aspect of the job.

Pros: Ability to work independently
Cons: Long working hours
