Department of Mineral Resources Reviews

SENIOR STATE ACCOUNTANT

I apply PFMA and Treasury Regulations on my day to day work and have a good knowledge of PERSAL, LOGIS and BAS systems. I work hand in hand with internal and external Auditors. I provide training and support for my subordinate as a supervisor. I have developed professionalism through my working experience and able to work in a team. I process invoices from suppliers and claims from employees. The most challenging aspect of my job is that there is no growth within the Department and being the goal keeper of every transaction to be processed, you ahve to be accurate and carefull at all times. i enjoy working with my co-workers as sometimes one cannot get through the work done and we can do it in a team. A typical work at the office is to make sure that all payments are processed within 30 days of receipt and to do a daily reconciliation of creditors statements with the processed payments. Clearing of general ledger accounts and jounalising them to the right core centre.

Pros: my work doesnot make me to knock off late because of a certain challange that i can not cover.
Cons: there is no career growth

It has been a great learning exposure

I am within the Mine Environmental Management chief directorate and mine closure sub directorate. We are currently working on the rehabilitation of ownerless and derelict mines all over South Africa and air quality monitoring in areas where there were previously mining asbestos. I'm also engaged in field investigations on subsidence on areas that were previously undermined. Typical day to day work includes coordinating and attending meetings, report writing, resolution of ad-hoc queries enquiries from the public/municipality/other government departments etc. collection of data from Council for Geoscience and MINTEK on various studies that are conducted on behalf of the department. The relationship that I have established with my co-workers is strong, we work together well as a team and we strive for the best as one.

Pros: Exposed to various fields within environmental management
Cons: Working with communities can be difficult at times

It is a great learning curve to work with mining industries and regulate them

Processing of environmental authorisation applications and closure applications. Conducting compliance inspections and writing reports afterwards. I have a good relationship with my co-workers. And I work very well with my supervisor. I have learned on how to monitor compliance in mining operations and i enjoyed conducting site inspections. Dealing with a difficult client is very challenging and also getting the mines to comply with relevant legislation.

Pros: Great opportunity to work in different industries.
Cons: Travelling for long distances

Excellent learning curve

I have learned things that I didn't know from that organization. Working there was a good thing even if things are very slow, you learn very slow. People from there were very friendly and they don't judge other people and what I have enjoyed the most was that; we had birthday parties every month meaning bosses allowed us to enjoy our lives.

Pros: work/ life balance
Cons: no money

A challenging career

I am expressing interest in the advertised opportunity and i am delighted to find that my academic accomplishments meet the necessary requirements. As a Logistics student i have acquired skills in procurement, management, supply chain and experience in managing diverse teams. I am competent in computer applications, such as MS Word, MS Excel and MS PowerPoint. Most of my life experiences bear testimony that I can work in teams, be a follower, and manage people and systems. I am confident that i can bring high level of performance, add value to the company and develop my skills further. I am well positioned to join your company and make an immediate positive impression.

Getting more Experience

I arrived at work at 8:00 the first thing I do i take out my Laptop and check my emails and then start my work day, I have a good relationship with my co-workers so far I haven't had any argument or conflict of interest with anyone. So far I learnt on how to plan an engagement like doing engagement letters, project planning or approval, notification letter, knowledge of audit, performing the engagement, execution which is field work and reporting. I enjoy working with other people as a group, the challenge is when you want information from the client and the client doesn't have the information.

Pros: Getting more experience which will lead me to get a permanent post
Cons: Not knowing where you stand, whether you'll get a permanent post or not.

Often willing to learn

I am enjoying working in this department as am learning a lot from my co-workers. I got good relationship with them as i always want to learn from them. i have learnt how to handle the challenges concerning the suppliers and the clients in connection to inventory and distribution. As i am controlling and distributing inventory on daily basis the most challenge that i normally come across with is when the supplier deliver the inaccurate quantity of the goods, however i am actually enjoying when i work together with my team helping and assisting each other.

Pros: hard worker
Cons: working overtime
