Department of Higher Education Reviews

Experienced at analysing client problems and helping them

My work is great because i get to deal with queries from people (students) with regard to their qualifications and then i help them where i am able, or screen the call to the most knowledgeable person. as i came into this industry i did not really have experience in how to work with people but now i have gained that knowledge because of the good coworkers that i have been exposed to, whom are really willing to help me learn. the challenging part about the job is that some people will call to inquire but will be very aggressive, but then all you have to do is calm down and make the person feel comfortable until they calm down as well. otherwise i love my job.

Pros: i do basically everything that is supposed to be done within my directorate, which helps me learn quite a lot of things in a short period
Cons: Exposure to Differing Perspectives and Opinions

Conducive working environment

At a certain time, year 2011/2012, we had 65 cases, which helped me to hit the ground running. Hence a typical day is comprised of meeting the employees and employer/supervisor in order to buing a strong sustainable relationship, resolve the grievances, coaching , teaching and mentoring the supervisors as well as advising management including supervisors on their day to day work. As a trained ER personnel, I am always fair in my dealings, supporting and building the relationship between the employer and employee, and refrain from creating a climate which jeopardize the peace at workplace. I have learned that no one can protect you but the policy. The most challenging aspect of the job is when management acted illegal/illogical/irrational and give advice but turned sown and when such irrational decision is challenged, management ask me to advise them and to defend such an illegal act.

Pros: Growth, both personal and professional
Cons: Reading and Reaserch for long hours, especially if preparing for case

My snap summary of work as Labour Relations Manager

My names are Yakalani Calvin and my surname is Muvhumbe. A typical day as Labour Relations Manager include: (1) Check diary to plan for the day; (2) Delegation of task to subordinates (3) Addressing IR an ER issues on the table & (4) Schedule and attend meetings with different stakeholders (5) Daily report to my manager and (6) Daily report received from my subordinates I have learned that only the policies will protect my reputation and allow me to grow as a person as well as professionally, that is why when I want to tackle any labour issue, the first thing I always do is to ask myself which policy is relevant in the circumstance. I enjoy to work with people and adding value to their lives. My most challenging aspect of the is when I advice the line manager, refuse to take advice, and when the issue goes out to bargain councils or CCMA, the manager refuse or reluctant to go and I am left alone defending a decision of a manager who is not in.

Pros: Great opportunity to grow
Cons: Long hours

An overall working experience and development program.

A wonderful development opportunity and experience. Quite a number of growth a promotion opportunities, definitely worth the effort and labor. Healthy environment because of the helpful and cheerful staff. Though not without its challenges of reaching deadlines and at time miscommunication, one leaves having learned how to resolves such matters and having composure through times of pressure and being able to complete the tasks in a timely and reasonable fashion

Pros: Excellent development.
Cons: No weekends off.
