Department of Agriculture And Rural Development Reviews

Great stepping stone

A typical work day varies each month, because the program is designed for us to rotate quarterly between sections and learn from new mentors. A typical day would start with a report of the previous' days tasks and a briefing of the respective supervisor on what still needs to be done. Work is usually assigned on a daily or weekly basis because it's very short tasks that can be completed in a day or two. In each section there is usually two to four people working there and one has to learn to get along and work effectively with the different types of personalities. I have learnt how to prioritise workloads and work according to deadlines. I enjoy working with numbers and calculations the most. Most challenging aspect of the work is keeping yourself interested and motivated in the work once it becomes very routine and you find that the learning phase has come to an end.

Pros: Opens doors in the whole government sector
Cons: Limited chance for growth

Improved interpersonal relations

Department of Agriculture has a mixture of scientists, technicians and general labour ( farm workers). My job include: 1.) Developing wellness and safety policies and ensuring that all employees are trained in manner that brings understanding according to their levels. 2.) Assessment of employees with deteriorating work performance and assist them accordingly. 3.) Health promotion through health and safety presentations, information sharing via emails, posters and intranet. 4.) Baseline counselling to employees who are involved on Injury on Duty/ Occupational exposure. 5.) Management of Incapacity and Injury on duty cases. I have learnt to work with different employees, with different education level, different background, cultural diversity etc. And I enjoy sharing health issues with them. However it is very challenging to get the supervisors to understand that wellness and safety programmes are there to help reduce stress on them and to help them manage their problematic employees.

Pros: Wellness and safety programmes also benefit me as an individual to live a responsible life that will contribute to an incresed lifespan
Cons: In order to be successful ,employees must have confidence in you. With Safety cases you are responsible for other people's lives. One mistake can destroy your future or your life

Young hard working woman

I write in response to the above position as advertised. Currently I am volunteering agricultural advisor (Intern) in the KZN department of agriculture and rural development based in Jozini. I deserve this opportunity because I'm a young educated and driven woman, who is passionate about science and also building my future in science. I am a hard worker, even though I'm currently unemployed but I chose to volunteer for free in the department so that I'll gain experience and do what I love the most. They say if you love something you can do it for free, I'm an example of that. I obtained a bachelor degree in agriculture specializing in Crop Science and Plant Breeding in 2016. The topic that I did for my honors final year project is titled “Wheat seed quality in response to short-term storage” which was supervised by Prof. AT Modi. I feel confident that I meet the stated requirements for the post (see the attached Curriculum Vitae) and hereby submit my application for the vacancy.

Pros: We make people's lives better, buy helping them to make a living out of agriculture
Cons: Not enough resources to work with
