Great career building expetience

My working hours was from Mom to Fri, 07h00t0 03h00 and 2 hours of travelling to and from the mine, arriving home at 04h30 everyday. I redlly enjoyed it because I was not working during the week ends. We worked as a team whereby when one of us is absent one wouldn't even realise because as we're multi skilled and make sure that out work is covered and don't miss deadlines. I have learnt that people differ and everyone is good in their own right. We need to respect each other' s culture, religion and background. I enjoyed recruitment, the whole process from affecting to the bringing in of a new employee. The most challenging aspect of my job was when we appointed the right candidate and decided to decline the offer after going through that long recruitment process.

Pros: We had great benefits, housing, water & lights allowances and a great bonus every year
Cons: 2 hours travelling by bus everyday was tir

We practiced safety at all times

After morning meeting we all go to our changing rooms, from there we all go to the sections and take a hand over from the out going shift. We checked the log book to see how was the previous shift, then we do our own plant inspection. We report any defects to the supervisor. If it is something that needs immediate attention, we wright a job card for maintenance department. We also make follow up becouse we need the plan running so that we can meet our daily target. When the plant is running we do hourly inspections and cleaning /house keeping. Some of other things we used to maintain by our self because we had millwright in the shirt. I liked when we were meeting targets and when the plant I running smoothly. The most challenging aspect is when the plant is on break down and we don't manage to get it up and running on time.

Pros: We did a lot of trainings
Cons: We worked 12 hours a day

In my last role I worked at De Beers Group

In my last role I worked at De Beers Group where I managed the supply of strategic Mining Commodities and services to the De Beers Group of Companies (GoC) in order to ensure maximum benefit and value add, in line with the organization’s strategic needs and operational compliance to minimise risk to the business. I also lead the definition, implementation and continuous improvement of mining category strategies with specific emphasis on combining capital, spare parts, repairs, maintenance and services so as to allow a beneficial agreement i.r.o. cost and risk for use by the companies. I was responsible for identifying and realizing opportunities to reduce commodity costs in a sustainable manner while achieving company objectives. Accountable for the development of relationships with the category suppliers and management of specific Total Cost of Ownership benefits to ensure continuity of supply risks are minimized and business requirements are satisfied across the marine companies reducing both cost and risk.

Pros: N/A
Cons: N/A

Great Opportunity to expand my knowledge

Working in a company where I was treated as an asset and not just a number , it is homely where one can view it as a home away from home . A relaxed environment that encourages one to work beyond their optimal capabilities. I have learnt to think out the box and that I don't have to own a certain hat in order for me to wear it.I enjoyed being exposed to different departments either than the field of study that I qualified in because working at a Supply Chain we all lean on each other like dominoes if one falls we all fall.My challenge was the level of urgency that some people lacked and that what may be a priority to me is a subsequence to the next person.

Pros: Great exposure in different department
Cons: minimal chances of promotion

Excellent training and developmental organisation.

Excellent exposure and development. Sound customer focus and engagement. Cross-discipline exposure on tender boards, strategic sessions and leadership forums. Within security and risk management there is never a dull moment in the mining industry which provides for a creative environment to deal with challenges and turning them into opportunities. My current job is most enjoyable in terms of exploring the various mines and identifying shortcomings(vulnerabilities) and providing leadership with mitigating strategies. Re-structuring within disciplines is the least enjoyable factor because of uncertainty.

Pros: Training and development
Cons: Constant restructuring

Good practice

De beers is the great company to work for it,I have learned lot of this in this company, how to.practice safety at work and at home and to work as a team in,when it was in production working shift in a team you will find that one team it has 30 team members in three department.as I was a safety rep I had to learn how all the department so it can be easy for me to declare the working area safe if it is safe.I work with great team whereby we will caoch each other when we notice and safe behaviour, even now we are not that big team but we still follow the values of the company.zero harm, non negotiable standard and other values.

Pros: Great opportunity
Cons: Shift work

I am presently working as an Instrument Mechanician, and I am willing to grow.

I do maintenance, installation, inspection and route cause analysis; calibration and commissioning, training of subordinates; standby and shift work. I have exposure on Smelter plant, Concentrator plant and shaft.

Pros: The culture for studying and doing projects is in place.
Cons: 12hour shift _ interacting with the millwright and process personnel, involved in Electrical and Fitter maintenance.
