Challenging work environment & Problem Solving

A typical workday consists of liaison with clients, contractors and other professionals. It results in designing and draughting of drawings and training of personnel. I also do tendering for new work. Relationships with co-workers is relaxed and spontaneous. I have learnt of myself that I am at my happiest when there is almost too much pressure to get projects completed. The part of my job that I enjoy the most is research and putting together algorithms that reduces the effort to incorporate certain aspects I come across in my research. The most challenging part of my work is tendering. It is frustrating to tender against companies that do not understand their cash flows and working environments. This results in minimal profitability and the situation is getting worse. The most frustrating part is that clients are so ignorant that they accept quotes that will almost definitely result in projects that will not get finished because of restricted cash flows due to current tendering strategies.

Pros: Being my own boss is both challenging and a bit daunting at the same time.
Cons: Very long working hours combined with very low profitability.

Excellent learning curve through research required for some projects.

Workday typically starts at 07h30 working right through to 19h30 or even later if work load requires this. A work day typically starts out reading e-mails and reacting on these, following up with staff yesterday's progress and whether there are problems that require my attention. Check for new tenders. Compile invoices if required. Sit down to do design and draugthing work. I had two technical staff and the secretary working for me. We had good relations between us. I have learnt to give away control is very difficult. It is so easy to believe that one must do everything yourself but once you trust others to assist you start to work smarter, not harder. I enjoy research and design. Coaching young engineers and technicians is also quite enjoyable especially to see how they develop in their careers. Technical report writing is an art and because it involves research, I love doing this. The most challenging would be to work through the monotony of administration.

Pros: To be in charge of my time management.
Cons: Smaller compabies tend to take a lot out of a person - long working hours.
