My experience at Control Risks

I enjoy the fact that I work with Partners, managers and staff in different countries. I am responsible to Africa so my job allows me to work in a matrix environment. I learned how to manage staff remotely and how to apply employment laws in East Africa, West Africa and Mozambique. The environment is friendly. What I do find challenging is that at times its difficult to have a connection with the rest of the HR staff (shared service team) as they are all based in London. As a result, I miss out on team activities and relationships as I am often left out in some of the work communications. I am a matured individual so I can work independently but I prefer to be closer to the team and I understand that I can't always be flown to the UK. My relations with the operations teams across Africa is exceptional.

Pros: Great opportunity to travel into Africa and UK
Cons: A lot of relations are build via Skype rather than face to face

I enjoy developing people and helping them succeed.

I am part of a global team providing HR advice and services to the Europe and Africa region. I partner with 3 Managing Directors and a team of managers. I drive strategy in a matrix environment and some of the offices I manage are spread across Africa.

Pros: Exposure to a global company and ways of work
Cons: Being isolated from the rest of the HR team who is based in London

Current work summary

I am part of a Region which covers Europe and Africa. We have 3 offices in Africa, i.e Kenya, Lagos and Johannesburg. I am the HR Advisor for Africa and work as part of the Europe team. Our Head Office is based in London. I report to the HR Manager in London but is Business Partner to the Senior Partner who is based in the Johannesburg Office.

Pros: Great opportunities to travel
Cons: 80% of my job is admin based (admin and capturing) and I feel under utilized
