A typical work day encompasses making sure all materials and equipment are available for the day tasks. The sterilization of the laminar flow hood must be done initially before any compounding can occur. the addition of all materials needed for the compounding procedures must then be done aseptically to ensure minimal movement outside the sterile environment. then compounding of cytotoxic mixtures accoring to legal script depending on type of cancer, body size, stage of cancer and treatment protocol. all prescriptions need to be verified for legality and that the drug and dose meets the standard treatment plan. If any deviance is found it is corrected with the medical Doctors on site.

The best working environment

A very big hospital with lots of employees, great academic hospital, professional staff. I learnt a lot and from the best as I'm working in a very busy ward, lots of interesting conditions. Nursing very ill patients with different conditions related to Cancer eg: oesophageal cancer. Assisting the doctors with resuscitation and intubation of patients.

Pros: Less opportunity for promotion and going to school
Cons: Working 12 hours daily in a very busy environment

Excellent learning curve

I love my job so much. I work at an ENT ward however, I get nurse lodgers from other disciplines as well. It is a very fulfilling job that exposes me to a broader level of nursing care. Working with airway on a daily basis has given me the skill to think and act as fast as possible to ensure patent airway. I relate very well with the rest of the staff which makes it very easy to lead the shift with ease. However, being a younger professional has its disadvantages in terms of delegating a subordinate older than me but I've learned to master the manner of approach. Respect and assertiveness is key. Working with almost all surgical conditions has offered me the opportunity to learn and be equipped in caring for my patients not forgetting the ability to interact with different professionals. I am open to learning and experiencing more and feel as though there is more I can do outside ENT and its cancers.

Working at Charlotte Maxeke Academic Hospital has been quite fulfilling for me. But i would like to practice in a job that i've studied for which is a occupational health nurse

Excellent learning curve

I worked in casualty department I have gained alot of experience, it was good working at CMJAH, I have learned how to resus, to do a blood gas and interpret it, i enjoy the adrenaline rush of saving a life, the challenging part is when a patient end up diseased

Great learning curve

I work in an oncology specialty ward, it has been a great learning place. I've learned about different types of cancers and their treatment plans. I have also had an opportunity to provide counselling to patients and families that are affected
