Willing to learn

I enjoy the opportunities on learning from other sections that I am not employed in because it helps me to grow my technical abilities. There is always a new challenge because the plant is still new ans there is a lot of modification and optimizatio to be done from both plant and people management perspective. We have a healthy working relationship with coworkers and assist each other to grow. I have learnt the impact of leadership of people willingness to achieve beyond what is on their contract. Working with energetic knowledgeable people in troubleshooting plant problem is exciting and make it easier for us to find identify root cause and implements solution timeously. The most challenging thing about the plant is that is does not allow for quality deviation because reworks are not possible and customers are paying a premium for our product because of its quality compared to other suppliers.

Pros: Great projects coming in the future as the industry grows
Cons: No opportunities for promotion

HR Value Chain

My day consists of meetings with customers (Senior Management team, trade union shop stewards etc). I also manage a team of Junior HR Business Partners, officers and administrators in training and development and employee benefits). I enjoy conflict management sessions, providing seminars on leadership development, coaching etc. The biggest challenges remain in the area of providing consistent and sustainable top customer service with limited resources, maintaining peace with all stakeholders in the ER space and senior managers, while maintaining the trust that ordinary rmployees have with the HR Department.

Pros: The job provides great opportunity to interact with all managers in the organization and also to have influence in the general decision making.
Cons: Managing relationships with all stakeholders in a sustainable manner becomes a challenge with limited footprint of HR staff in the whole of Africa.

Transformational and transactional functions.

Working for a multinational with many layers of management teams challenges one's day to day responsibilities since no Day is the same as the previous one. While the role encompassed strategic service to all business units, there's always a need to deal with low level queries like employee salsries discrepancies etc. The job has taught one to hover between transactional hr duties and some transformational duties. I enjoy spending time with managers in their meetings, learning more about their Busines and their challenges. Equally it's enjoyable spending time with employees on the floor understanding their challenges.

Pros: The job gives one an opportunity to put ones exoerience in use especially dealing with management queries and IR Matters.
Cons: The job has a lot of administration, which takes a lot of time which could be used to resolve lots of strategic and tactical challenges.

Excellent experience within the retail environment

A typical day at the company require completing admin tasks and activies i.e. completing offers to lease, lease agreements, and ensuring all related documentation is in place. Municipal reconciliations are next, ensuring that we paying amounts due to council are accurate. Site walk-abouts if the day allows it are done, to inspect the shops, new premises, to ensure that all things are in good order, and that we are compliant. I have a good relationship with all colleagues and bosses. I have had to re-learn some skills, as my days in a property company was a while back. I find that whilst I have had to re-learn certain skills, I am also acquiring new skills in terms of social engagements with the new millenium culture. The average age at the company is 30! I enjoy the energy. The most challenging aspect of the job is able to balance the administration work, and also able to be on the phone a lot.

Pros: Interactive work environment
Cons: long working hours

Excellent learning curve

The company is good and healthy, it pays well. It is very good in giving students an opportunity to learn and gain experience. There are so much instruments to work with where one need to know as a final year student who is intended to go for experiential learnership. I worked shifts, morning, afternoon and night, i was exciting because on has a whole week to rest and get weekends overtime. I had very nice and professional managers and supervisors as well as the colleague's. They are always willing to help a new comer whether is astudent or permanent. I enjoyed working in ICP laboratory being able to get what is needed by the company on my own without any help and able to apply all the skills i gained from tertiary level. The very exciting part was to write a report and then represent it to the managers and supervisors.

Pros: Great opportunity
Cons: Being able to work under pressure with high accuracy

Very stressful

I am a friendly, trustworthy and reliable person that is highly motivated. I am able to work effectively within a team/group or independently and very deadline originated. I am able to grasp new ideas and concepts quickly with training. I am straightforward, positive, have a friendly personality and have a good sense of humour. This has aided me in the supervision of staff and dealings with suppliers. I have been in a position of trust, handling money, and equipment on behalf of the company. I firmly believe that one must never be afraid to try something new, life tend to get monotonous when you stay within the limits of what you already know. With that in mind I constantly seek for chances to grow and I see this as a growth opportunity to develop my working skills.

Pros: great exposure globally
Cons: Long working hours

My 6 months experience at BASF

In a personal capacity as I am responsible for my own life and decisions. I do believe that I made the wrong move joining BASF South Africa. To wrap up my review it was a bad career move and I accept that I made that mistake.

Pros: Salary was higher
Cons: No work life balance. Not a good culture and environment to work in. Minimal support from external departments. Traveling distance is longer.

Dynamic and challenging work environment.

BASF is a company with a small workforce and big potential. Every single day throws up different challenges but with the people and structures that are in place, these challenges are overcome more often than not. The workforce is made up of experienced and loyal employees with an average service history of 7 years. Because of the small nature of the company, internal relationships are good with a solid understanding that we need each other to succeed. The most enjoyable part of the job is the comradery shared among the employees. The most challenging aspect of the job is navigating all the ever-changing economic landscape in order to keep your teams motivated and focused.

Pros: Driven by innovation.
Cons: Being part of a global organisation and being utilised as contingency measure.

Excellent learning curve

I have leant a lot at BASF especially with regards to policies and procedures as we recently had a red RC audit and managed to get green in the re audit which meant that I worked closely with our German specialists to get our risk assessments, work procedures and safety policies in place. This was a tremendous learning opportunity for me. My team of artisans are dedicated and a pleasure to work with.

Pros: excellent team work and support especial from our German counter parts
Cons: long working hours and permanent standby without remuneration
