Barclays Africa Reviews

I have been with my employer for 10 years full and I have learnt a lot since 01 August 2006.

New business acquision is one of my key roles. Maintaining existing customer base is as important as the above aspect I have a very strong relationship whith my team and colleagues in general I have learnt that people are not the same but all needed to be treated fairly and with respect and dignity they deserve. I also learnt not to take anyone for granted. Engaging with my clients every day pushes me to jump out of my bed in the morning as I am alway curious to see if who am I going to meet and whose life am I going to change for better that day. Most challenging aspect is not knowing what to expect in terms of job security.

Pros: Part of global community therefore the horizon is wide enough where one can work anywhere in the world.
Cons: Unpredictable retrenchments

Excellent learning curve

I learned to work with people from all aspects of life and to understand their needs before forcing any product on them. What made me to wake up every morning to go to work was that I had such an amazing team, it was home away from home, When coming to targets we used to "kill them"...And you would never find one member at 100% & the other(s) at 50% because we were a TEAM! What I enjoyed most was to open people's eyes and not always by them taking the products but to offer them free education (knowledge) and it was bonus when they come back to thank me.The most challenge I/we had was when we received a new manager who used to micromanage us, he killed the team's moral so it was very challenging for me as a team to motivate them at times as I was also feeling the same as them even though I could not tell them but eventually I managed to change the manager's mentality and we were the best team nationally. Oh what a learning curve!

Pros: Flexible hours
Cons: Driving 24/7

Personal, Intellectual and Technical Skills Growth Opportunities

This year has been a tremendous learning opportunity for me. Last year I was part of a team where team work, structure, cohesiveness, respect, trust and growth was not at all present. Where even though trying my best to show my worth, went unnoticed. I moved from CIB without an increase in salary and thus also not receiving an annual increase in January 2016, nor any performance bonuses. Yet, this was the best decision I could have made. In the BTO Lean Academy, I found my niche. I love training and coaching people. I love Lean Six Sigma and process improvement. I love the colleagues with which I have the privilege to work with.

Pros: Love my job, passionate about Lean Six Sigma and training - feel like I add value.
Cons: No room for promotion and poor recognition of talent and value.

Excellent learning curve but no appreciation for staff

I like challenging environments so that I can learn and grow. I'm a team player and enjoying unlocking my teams potential so that they can grow and take additional responsibilities. I like stretching myself and go beyond the call of duty.

Pros: Great opportunity for promotion but the promotion process is very bias.
Cons: Long working hours, no appreciation for staff

Working for ABSA has provided big exposure to payments industry and what it takes to support it.

Given the primary responsibility is the support of ABSA Bank Real time Gross Settlement system which facilitates the payment of all in country ZAR payments above 5 million rand a day would include operational checks during Start of Day and End of Day, ongoing monitoring of the system, management of production application; network; server issues We have an end to end value chain working relationship from development to testing to production support, dealing with all in a matrix management model to ensure best operation practice and customer service. Biggest learning opportunity was the take on of an agile working approach for the SDLC this approach has now been implemented into operational support and customer service. The operational challenges of ongoing process and service improvement. Most challenging as always is the test of getting all to communicate buy in and serve together.

Partnership

I have the necessary skills, abilities and attitude, which allows me to collaborate with business, stakeholders and diverse teams. Furthermore, building and maintaining relationships are important elements to achieve success. Africa is a unique and still largely unconquered market place. In majority of my roles, I have gained the exposure and experience within the Africa markets. I am also open to new opportunities, relocation and always learning continuously.

Pros: Team and customer engagement
