Auditor General of South Africa Reviews

Exciting auditing environment where i have learnt about auditing and service delivery.

The Auditor General of South Africa (AGSA) is a chapter 9 institution My typical work day involves the following: Checking Outlook and confirming scheduled meetings and stakeholder engagements as well as urgent information requests. Have learnt about the relationship between audit findings and their impact on service delivery. I enjoy being tasked with the responsibility of building relationships with research institute that assist the AGSA to understand the government departments' work The challenge of the job is to strive to change the perception of seeing the work of the AGSA as that of being a "policing" department or entity.

Pros: An excellent place to understand how public funds are spend to address the tripple challenges facing our government: poverty alleviation, building an equal society, and job creation
Cons: More South Africans need to understand the work that the AGSA does to improve service delivery, this mandate doesn't receive the attention it deserves.

Excellent

We would go to clients and audit. I have audited 4 public entities. Department of Royal Household, Department of Human Settlements, Zululand District Municipality and uMhlathuze Municipality. We audited the components like inventory, property, plant and equipment, cash and cash equivalents, trade and other receivables, non current liabilities and current liabilities. I have gained a thorough and sound knowledge of the audit process from the gathering of audit evidence stage through to the evaluation stage, where I express an independent audit opinion on the fairness and presentation of the annual financial statements. it bas been an exciting opportunity for me, but most importantly I have had an insight of what actually happens at the municipalities, making necessary recommendations to management to minimise the risks they might be exposed to.

Pros: I am a team player
Cons: I am unable to challenge a senior employee that I am assigned to work with but im working on it.

Excellent Training Institution

I work more than the required hours per day due to the nature of the work that I do, I report for work at 7:30am and leave at 4:30pm. I have a good relationship with my team members, I am an open person, friendly and very eager to learn. Through my article years at AGSA I have learnt the importance of working in a team, having respect for different cultures and different age groups. I enjoy getting to meet new people, meeting new clients and building the confidence of South Africans through auditing public sector. The most challenging aspect of the job is the extensive over time worked during the reporting periods.

Pros: Building the confidence of South Africans, Opportunities provided for academic support
Cons: Extensive over time hours worked

Excellent learning curve

Learning experience At Auditor General I have learned a lot about auditing the financial statements as well as communication skills both writing and verbal. Articles at AGSA what I love the most is that at your third year you operate as a manager and you get to engage robustly with the stakeholders. You also have to manage the junior trainees and review their work and report on the status of the audit to management. The most challenging aspects of the job is to ensure that everyone pulls in their wait in order to meet the set deadlines. Therefore you need to always be in track and ensure that all the team members knows what to do and find solutions were there might be delays as to the meeting of a deadline.

Pros: Yuo get to be challanged and grow
Cons: Long working hours and deadlines might be met normatter what.

Excellent learning curve, great exposure to the government sectors, alot of reading required

I think the time spent at the Auditor General of South Africa was a fruitful time. I learnt alot about the was the country functions, the need for oversight, to read and listen to the news. The benefit of rotation also helped because one could see the difference between the departments and the public entities. The working papers also were designed well, so that one could have a better understanding of the ISAs and the work that you were doing.

Pros: Exposure to different sectors of government
Cons: Long working hours
