Agsa Reviews

I have just completed my SAICA Articles with the Supreme Audit Institution of South Africa.

In every assignment we undertook I actively participated in chairing the meeting and in some instances writing minutes of the meetings. I have been assisting the management in planning the schedule of work for each individuals in the team. I assisted junior members in the team in fulfilling their assignments. I participated in the discussion about the business environment of the client and also in identification of risks. I have learned to work effective with the team by consistently communication. I enjoy to review the work of other colleague and assisting in clearing the coaching notes. The articulation of your stand point in terms of the findings you have raised to the client especially were there are disagreements.

Pros: I am willing to help others and a good communicator.
Cons: Dishonesty with the performance of every individual

Typical work day

1. Typical Work Day involves having high level view and monitoring of the audits. staff matters and daily admin activities which mostly involve the driving of the strategic goals. 2. An excellent working relationship. One that is based on a basis of continual sharing of knowledge between all members making up of the team. 3. That a team even though made of such a wide spectrum of personalities that are so wide and diverse that when true respect, care and concern is shared for each and every team member that it creates an environment allowing these broad personalities to come together in synergy which directly translates to high level of quality work performance in all aspects by all team members 4. To not be part of a team but to be part of a family where I am the head of the family but create an environment where all are treated equal.. 5. It is sometimes challenging to deal with the politicians to get them on board

Pros: growth opportunities
Cons: long hours

The ICT business unit at the auditing organization.

The ICT business unit is the base support of the AGSA with network, security, laptop issuing, development of automated systems, amending of existing automated systems, etc. The organization is great, but the fact that it's public makes me wonder if I'll learn enough of the ICT technologies and methodologies. I won't mind to work here if they assign me a permanent position as a Business Analyst. I like how employees treat one another, and that is completely different from what I've heard of about industries. People used to talk about hoe people are arrogant, mean, and heartless at work places especially managers. But here at AGSA, the manager treat people with morals and respect. I would like to work in this kind of the environment.

Pros: I dont think there are position available, maybe 1 or 2.
Cons: Long working hours

Good starting experience

The AGSA organization has a few ICT employees because it is an auditing institution. ICT serves as a supporting business-unit. My relationship with co-workers is good on the personal and academic level. I'm a National Diploma IT (Business Applications) graduate at Tshwane University of Technology. I implemented theory of many subjects, such as: Computing Fundamental, Computing Systems, Database, most significantly the Business Analysis and e-commerce. Practically I have implemented the software development -Visual Basic & Advanced Visual Basic, SQL, and PL/SQL. During my internship of 10 months (3 months theory and 7 months practical), I got to understand more of Business Analysis and Project Management as well. I have 5 months experience so far with 2 months to complete. My mentor taught me Use Case diagram, managing expectations with stakeholders. I would attend sessions with him when eliciting requirements.

Pros: Good first time experience
Cons: Public sector

Excellent people skills

I have worked in an audit firm (KPNG) where I served articles and qualified as a chartered accountant, for 7.5 years. This is where I acquired my skills in Finance and auditing. I have lectured at the University of Zululand for about 4.5 years, where I polished my communication skills. I worked for the IDC for about 7 years and this is where I obtained a lot of industrial experience as we dealt with different sectors when doing an analysis of our clients who applied for finance. I worked for Southern Sun Hotels in their Finance Department and learnt a lot about the hospitality industry. I have worked at the Auditor-General where I headed a business unit of about 190 staff members - 80% of whom were professional staff and the rest support staff. This has improved my people skills a lot and has given me leadership experience.

Pros: Great communication skills
Cons: A lot of overtime hours

REVIEW

Typical Work Day – this involves having high level view and monitoring of the audits and the status of these audits. To not only provide technical assistance on matters regarding the audit. Daily admin activities and these mostly involve the driving of the strategic goals of the AGSA as a whole. An excellent working relationship. One that is based on a basis of continual sharing of knowledge between all members making up of the team. Uplifting the team and keeping them motivated with a positive mind frame as well. That a team even though made of such a wide spectrum of personalities that are so wide and diverse that when true respect, care and concern is shared for each and every team membe To not be part of a team but to be part of a family where you are the head of the family but you create an environment where we all treated equal The inconsistencies within the office as AGSA as a whole things should be done the same no matter which provincial

Pros: growth
Cons: work life balance

Good oppprtunity to learn

A typical work day starts at 8am ends at 4:30pm and we are based at the client and work as team seating in a boardroom. We work closely as a team and report to an assistant manager and the manager. The most challenging aspect is the difficulty of the client. In some instances, they give us incorrect information or pull ranks on us as trainees and refuse to cooperate. What I have is how to handle difficult clients and how to think on my feet. I have also learnt how to present in meetings and chair those meetings. Another great aspect was to improve my technical skills as accountant and auditor as I was dealing with day to day accounting problems through reviewing and auditing financial statements and the performance of government institutions. What I enjoyed was to be given an opportunity supervise my fellow colleagues and to be given platforms to chair meetings with the client's management.

Pros: Good opportunity for growth
Cons: Long working hours
